5 tips to keep you walking in Winter!

If it's feeling a little crisper where you live or you're travelling to a cooler climate, with a little planning and preparation, you can still enjoy all the benefits walking offers. Here are a few ideas that will keep you walking and staying active during the Winter months.

1. Time of Day

Instead of heading outdoors when the sun is at its lowest and the chill factor is at its highest, do a quick weather check and choose the warmest part of the day. If you walk with one the many free Heart Foundation Walking groups, remember that you have flexibility when planning your group walks. It is very simple to change the time and duration of the group walks to suit the changing season.

2. Dress the Part Time of Day

Winter is a great time to rug up, and those in the South Eastern states understand the value of layering. Choose a warm base layer and the cover up with a waterproof outer layer. You can always rely on the weather being unpredictable so as they say in the scouts, “Be Prepared”. Keeping your head and hands warm with a beanie and gloves can also make the walk more comfortable. Last but not least, is suitable footwear. If you are walking in wet weather, remember to wear good quality socks and some waterproof shoes, it makes jumping in puddles even more fun!

3. Location, Location, Location

No-one knows your local area better than you, so plan your walks to minimise the risk of coming across flooded waterways or soggy and boggy marshes. Plan your walk along the high ground, where you can find shelter if the rain makes a sudden visit. For instance, walk a circuit of your local shopping strip and find the café with the best hot soup in town.

4. Change it up

When the forecast is rain, rain and more rain, then consider moving to an inside venue, such as a shopping centre, a community hall, PCYC or local sports complex. You can always swap a neighbourhood walk for some gentle exercise or stretching session. You could create a step counting challenge and invite your family and friends to join in. It adds extra value to walking around the house.

5. Group Power

When the weather is bleak outside, it is easy to curl up in front of the fire and shut yourself off from the world. Being a part of a Heart Foundation Walking group helps keep you stay motivated, feel safety in numbers and provides a real sense of belonging. There is nothing like the encouragement of a group of friends to get you out the front door.  Simply search for a Heart Foundation Walking group in your local area, and if you can’t find a group near you, now is a great time to start your own!
